Five Things I’ve Learned About My Marriage

Being married has taught me some things that I don’t think I could have learned any other way. Strange behaviors and strange information entered my life the day I was officially married to The Mister. We have been married for 8 years and I have learned a lot in that time. We have had many ups and some downs in our relationship, and all those things have strengthened our friendship and our marriage.

1. The Mister can’t read my mind. If I don’t say it out loud, I am not allowed to be upset about it.

2. Details ARE important. If I’m not detailed enough, when I ask The Mister to put the groceries away in the refrigerator, he may or may not put all the groceries away in the refrigerator STILL in the grocery bags.

3. Nonsense words are good for diffusing tension. The Mister and I have some words that we use when an argument is getting too drawn out. Try looking at your spouse and saying something nonsensical in the middle of a heated discussion and see how that goes.img_6645

Those words, in that order, have made for some pretty funny arguments. It’s great because neither one of us knows when the other is going to throw those words around. It’s even funnier because it’s an inside joke. These words have become our “truce” words.

4. The way I show love isn’t the way The Mister receives love. Read the Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman, it will change your relationship.

  • I love receiving letters and gifts and want quality time with undivided attention.
  • The Mister likes me to serve him/help him (mow the lawn/wash his car) and encourage him.

5. Men fart and burp WAY more than I thought. I’m not saying they aren’t allowed to be gassy, but oh my goodness!

I remember being single and always romanticizing what it would be like to be married to my best friend. I assure you that I have found that I only over-romanticized a little. I am married to a very loving, caring, compassionate guy. He takes such good care of me, puts up with my crazy, AND he helps me take care of my mom and her crazy. WHO does that?

I love my Mister and am so grateful for him.

  1. Indeed, details are important! I have learned to write details into simple shopping lists, because Hubby tends to imagine that some other (cheaper) product is magically the same as the thing I actually want, even though they really aren’t. So I often write things like “It must have these exact words in the name” or “Accept no substitutes.”

    1. I do that too and then when I think he’s got it down and I decide to just say, “Get the sparkling water that we always get.” He brings the one we NEVER get and I inevitably, because of my control issues, hurt his feelings even though it was really my fault for not being detailed enough. I love my Mister:) He is amazing in so many ways. There are just some things I will always need to do myself.
