Attitude of Gratitude

As we start to settle into November, I am always reminded about being thankful and having an attitude of gratitude.

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

I remember the first time I read that verse, I thought, “Wow, I have so much to be thankful for, but I never see my circumstances from that angle.”

We’ve had no money in the bank before, I mean, NO MONEY, not even in our savings, BUT all our bills were paid, we had food in the refrigerator and we had all we needed. THAT is something to be thankful for.

We’ve been sick and not been able to work, or do anything for that matter, but we had insurance and the medicine we needed, plus the “sick time” to be able to rest from work. THAT is something to be thankful for.

I hadn’t ever really thought about this until today, but the word gratitude is a noun, and there isn’t a verb form of the word gratitude.

Gratitude is the state of being thankful.

The word thankful is an adjective. It is being aware and appreciative – grateful.

Gratitude is a state of being, and being thankful is an expression of that awareness.

I thought that was cool.

Today I am grateful for :

  • Family time spent with my mom and The Mister
  • Memories made with my mom

My mom had a stroke in 2008 and she lives with us. Often our schedules are so busy we don’t get to do a whole lot of fun stuff, but today we went to a movie together and it was great!

She cracks me up with some of things she says, and I’m so glad that I get to spend time doing that with her.

As she gets older, and more time passes, I wonder how much time I have left with her and it makes me sad, but rather than dwelling in that thought, I’d rather make the most of the time we have left.

In this season of gratitude, what are you most thankful for?
